The fallacies of extremism and addressing it through the understanding of moderation in Islam

In today’s modern world, Muslims have greater access to information and are exposed to a wider spectrum of views and diverse interpretations pertaining to Islam. This impactful trend has a great influence towards shaping the thoughts and beliefs of amongst some of us in our Muslim community and contributed to the emergence of liberalism and extremism.

The fallacies of extremist and radical ideologies adopted by a small minority needs to be understood by the masses. There is also a dire need to eradicate these ideologies by countering and replacing them with values and perspectives based upon moderation in Islam.

This Wacana will examine some of the key concepts and beliefs that are widely held and misunderstood by extremist groups such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS. These concepts include al-Wala’ wa al-Bara’ (Loyalty and Disavowal), which is believed to be central in their ideology, Jihad and Takfir among others.

In our attempt to address this stressing issue of extremism, this Wacana will highlight the importance of  contextualizing Islam and approaches to refute any form of radical ideologies based on the true essence of moderation in Islam.
