To mould and develop community’s worldviews
as well as chart its direction through activities at strategic
and intellectual level reaching out beyond the Muslim community
and leadership.
Background
Pergas the acronym for Persatuan Ulama' & Guru-Guru Agama Islam
(Singapura), or the Singapore Islamic Scholars & Religious Teachers
Association (PERGAS) was founded in February 1957.
Having its roots as an association dedicated to the welfare of
Religious Teachers, PERGAS has since gone a long way. It has evolved
into an organization that provides training and education for
the religious teachers and the general public. Pergas has also
handled social issues ranging from programs for upliftment of
poverty, to address social issues and to raise the quality of
moral life in Singapore. Amongst the specific areas that PERGAS
has been involved in includes providing structured Islamic Education
to adult learners since 1980, training of Islamic Religious teachers
and scholars to be contemporaneous, and the promotion of religious
harmony through various programs & activities. It hopes to continue
its efforts in raising the quality of moral life in Singapore
and contributing to the progress of the nation and humanity. Pergas
has many a times initiated multilateral programs involving socio-religious
organizations in Singapore and novel programs that fulfil the
needs of the Singaporean Muslim especially and the Singaporeans
at large generally.
Some statistics
Pergas now has more than 600 members.
There are more than 1000 students currently benefitting from Pergas
courses. These courses range from modular, certificated and diploma
programs all the way to a degree program conducted jointly with
the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
Pergas programs and initiatives have been mainly financed through
zakat and donations.
